TCM has undergone an interesting history in its relationship with North American markets. Initially all of its manufacturing took place in Japan, exporting their lifts to the USA, where they had a distribution center. During its development period in the late 1950’s, TCM had a technical collaboration agreement with the US Clark Forklift Company.  To meet increased demand, In September 1988, Toyo Umpanki Co. established TCM Manufacturing, USA Inc. (TMU) in West Columbia, South Carolina. TMU began producing forklift trucks early the next year. In 1992, it was named South Carolina’s Manufacturer of the Year. TMU had the capacity to manufacture over 5,000 lift trucks (from 1.5 – 4.5 ton capacity) annually.

1999 marked Toyo Umpanki Co.’s 50th anniversary and they celebrated by changing their name to TCM Corporation.  TCM Corp. is recognized world wide as a leader in research and development in both forklift trucks and other material handling products.  TCM solidified its reputation in North America over the next five years, eventually forming TCM USA Holdings in 2005, operating from Swedesboro, NJ.  At the same time, TCM became a subsidiary of Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., LTD. Several acquisitions and consolidations later, the company discontinued product manufacturing in West Columbia, SC, transforming the facility into a sales and distribution center, which it remains today, with dependence on product imports from Japan.

The company’s Shiga Plant in Japan is TCM’s main production base. It is located in Ohmihachiman City, a castle town in Western Japan. Originally established as a forklift truck production site, the Shiga Plant has grown to become a diversified facility that serves as the mother plant for industrial vehicles. A wide range of advanced material handling equipment is manufactured there, including electric forklifts, lift trucks, shovel loaders, and automatic guided vehicles for high-tech production factories. The Shiga Plant has fully adopted total productive maintenance and management (TPM) practices, earning citations for TPM excellence in 1996 and advanced TPM in 2007.
